The Bastrop Association for the Arts

Salinas Youth Art Contest

Purpose: The purpose of the Salinas Project is to provide an opportunity for children to explore the creative process using the life and works of Porfirio Salinas as a point of departure. Through this unit, children learn about the life of Salinas, born in Bastrop, who earned respect and admiration for his talent while still in grade school. This artist explored a variety of subjects, ranging from landscapes to bullfights, and eventually gained national attention when one of his admirers, then President Lyndon B. Johnson, proclaimed Salinas to be his “favorite artist”. However the students are not expected to copy or imitate Porfirio Salinas’s style or themes. BAFA encourages individual exploration and experimentation.
